Gobi Recycle Plan

The Goal:

In 2016, the Japanese company Gomi Recycle 110 announced a plan to build two factories which will take plastic waste and recycle it into furniture and eco-bricks for construction. One factory, in the Svay Rieng region, was planned to open in April 2019, and in October 2018, LingHang Investment Development Co Ltd held talks with city officials to build a recycling facility in Phnom Penh, which was planned to operate by mid-2019. The plant would use recycled waste to produce energy. Around 5,000 tonnes of waste every day is enough to be converted into electricity. SUS Environment, a developer of integrated municipal solid waste management in China, also expressed interest in working with Ling Hang on the project .

Issues with Solution Attempt:

Many companies, including Gomi Recycle 110 and LingHang, wanted to install facilities to take in plastic waste and recycle it to produce resources like electricity and more. These ideas would be left in limbo as discussions with officials would reach no end and they would end up building no installations. Both companies planned for 2019 openings, but it has been over a year and there still is no facility being built.
