Goals, parameters, and constraints

Constraints within the City

There are a plethora of factors which need to be considered when developing a solution to the lack of recycling practices contributing to the plastic buildup.

  • Solution must take into account the availability of resources that is given to make this solution sustainable to ensure its use and implementation.

  • Design should adhere to the limited space within communities and be executed with community’s support.

  • Solution must have potential in low income communities

  • Design will not go against the religious beliefs or the cultural practices of the community.

  • Should take into account that there are multiple demographic and economic pressures on the coastal resources located in Sihanoukville.

Resource Parameters

  • Final product should adhere to the resources that are within capabilities of the city and its government.

  • Needs to be an agreement on all parts of the stakeholders that will ultimately support and push the efforts of this project.

  • Plastic use should be avoided when implemented into the solution design materials so as to not add plastic waste to the community.

  •  If needed, plastic should only comprise approximately 10-15% or less of the final solution materials. Design should be aesthetically pleasing and visually engaging to targeted audiences of members within the community.

  • Final design should double participation of recycling within the community.

  • We aim to decrease the amount of waste recycled in Sihanoukville by at least 1%.

Design Goals

  • Devise a solution that will be effective, sustainable, and approved by the community.

  • Design should not further contribute to the issue at hand, and should therefore be made with biodegradable materials and should not create an excessive amount of waste as a byproduct.

  • End product should be familiarized and put into daily practice by the targeted audience.

  • Design should consist of sustainable materials and be able to reduce the current amount of plastic waste located within the community according to the design guidelines.

  • Aim to increase the amount of community awareness and participation in proper disposal practices.
