Miscellaneous Campaigns

The Goal:

Other actions to reduce the plastic bag usage include at least 30 supermarkets and minimarts who have volunteered to implement bag reduction measures. This resulted in the plastic bag consumption to be reduced by 3 times.

There have been current campaigns and volunteer garbage collections to pick up plastic around the city. At the 4-day Water Falling Festival Plastic Clean-Up, at least 6,000 people took part in a plastic-garbage collection effort around Tonle Sap Lake. The ICM estimated with increased community involvement and awareness it will lead to 175 tons of accumulated waste in public areas being collected and properly disposed of.

Issues with Solution Attempt:

This method for cleaning up and disposing of the current plastic waste is not a sustainable practice which should be continued. This practice of cleaning up empty water bottles is not utilized by the citizens throughout the city. The way water bottles are disposed and recycled is not efficient and frequently used in the daily lives of the citizens. Community participation should not be relied on to solve the problem. Rather, the design aspect of the problem should be targeted to find a solution that will last for the future. In addition, the current process in which plastic waste, like plastic bottles, are disposed of results in plastic being properly disposed of less frequently. Much of the plastic that needs to be recycled is instead littered onto the various streets, parks, and waterways in the city. The solution should create a more effective method which encourages citizens to appropriately throw away and recycle plastic bottles.
